TEMECULA, California, Mar. 3, 2019–Steffen Peters and Suppenkasper won the West Coast Dressage Festival CDI3* Grand Prix Special Sunday to log the 11th victory in 12 starts in California in the past 14 months.
Steffen of San Diego, California and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding scored 74.298 per cent for the win in the third event in this year’s series, after the second show was virtually wiped out by unprecedented rainfall.
Nick Wagman of Rancho Santa Fe, California placed second on Zenith on a score of 67.106 per cent with Emily Miles of LaCygne, Kansas on Quantum Jazz third on 66.191 per cent.
The second year of the West Coast series is struggling, according to reports by the organizer, with only one entry in the World Cup Grand Prix and six in the CDI3* Grand Prix for the Special–all combinations from the U.S.–that reflect the level of entries in other classes, and not enough to cover costs.
By comparison, the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida had 20 combinations from eight nations starting in the CDI3* Grand Prix for the Special and 13 in the Grand Prix for the Freestyle. In addition to Big and Small Tour senior and amateur competitions, there were 36 combinations competing in Wellington’s CDI youth divisions.
Steffen and other top riders have remained in California to support the circuit and Sabine Schut-Kery whose Grand Prix horse, Sanceo, has been laid up for several months and not able to compete so far this year, offered to cover an entry fee to demonstrate support.
