STOCKHOLM, Dec. 2, 2018–Isabell Werth recaptured the world No. 1 ranking with Weihegold OLD when the Olympic team gold medal and reigning World Cup partnership won the Saab Top 10 CDI5* Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday. Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Delaunay OLD posted a new personal best score to place second at the event he created.
Isabell and the 13-year-old Oldenburg mare scored 89.775 per cent in the Freestyle that with the winning Grand Prix result of 82.783 per cent on Saturday earned the rider €72,800/US$82,400 from the total purse of almost a quarter million Euros/US$275,000, the richest single dressage competition in the world.
The scores gave the pair 2,742 points to move them to No. 1 from second place, swapping ranking spots with Laura Graves and Verdades, the first American combination ever to stand at the top of the global rankings.
Sweden’s three-time Olympian Patrik Kittel and Delaunay OLD set a personal best, 85.875 per cent to be runnerup. The score included four marks of 10 for the degree of difficulty of the musical performance.
The 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding he owns along with Carol and Andrew Oatley, the family of his wife, Australian Olympian Lyndal Oatley.
World Equestrian Games gold medal German team mate Dorothee Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr. posted a personal best 84.725 per cent to place third. The previous best for Dorothee and the 12-year-old German Sport Horse gelding was 83.415 per cent set at Salzburg, Austria a year ago.
German Olympian Helen Langehanenberg and Damsey FRH, 16-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Americans Louise Leatherdale and Susanne Meyer, were fourth on 83.495 per cent.
Laura Graves and Verdades took over the rankings lead in September, the first American ever to be at the top of the world rankings, and held the position ahead of Isabell and Weihegold in October. Laura of the Orlando community of Geneva in Florida will drop to second place. The pair did not compete here after leading the United States to World Equestrian Games team silver and capturing individual silver at Tryon.
Isabell is the most decorated equestrian in Olympic history with 10 medals. On Weihegold, she was top of the world for 23 months through to the end of September.
Now she will again be No. 1 with Laura No. 2.
Isabell and her favorite, Bella Rose, moves up to No. 3 in a remarkable recovery in the past five months after the mare was out of competition for 3 1/2 years, and on Emilio will be No. 4. Isabell and Emilio won the debut of this event in 2017.
Isabell and the mare on which she took team gold and individual silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and claimed all three golds at the 2017 European Championships 300 miles/470km away in Gothenburg where she plans to return next April to defend the 2017 and 2018 World Cup titles she won on Weihegold.
