BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 25, 2018–João Paulo dos Santos and Carthago Comando SN won the CDI1* individual Intermediate I Freestyle after leading Brazil to team gold in the special event to qualify three teams for next summer’s Pan American Games.
João and the 12-year-old Brazilian-bred horse scored 74.375 per cent in the first freestyle for the pair. The duo has won all seven starts since competing as a six-year-old in young horse classes in 2013 and beginning international competition at Small Tour in July this year.
Argentina’s Vera Beatriz Protzen on Wettkonig placed second on 73.330 per cent with Brazil’s Mauro Pereira da Silva Junior on Don Enrico AMM third on 70.955 per cent.
Brazil, Argentina and Chile were successful here to qualify for the Pan Ams in Lima, Peru next July.
Two nations will in turn qualify at the Pan Ams, staged once every four years, for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The United States earned a start in Tokyo with its silver medal performance at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon in September.
