STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 17, 2018–Isabell Werth rode Bella Rose to victory in the German Masters World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday in only the third Big Tour musical performance over a span of four years.
Isabell and the 14-year-old Westfalen mare scored 85.710 per cent for the win. This was the 12th straight victory for the world’s No. 4 partnership going all the way back to this same German Masters four years ago, then 3 1/2 years absent from competition while dealing with a soundness issue and 10 performances since returning to the show ring at the end of June this year.
“This was her last show before her injury four years ago, so to come back today and to win like this is something special!” Isabell said.
The pair led Germany to World Equestrian Games team gold and claimed individual gold in September, the last competition for Isabell and Bella Rose before Stuttgart.
Since the start of Big Tour 5 1/2 years ago the duo’s freestyles were as a 10-year-old at Aachen, Germany in 2014 and a second at Cappeln, Germany in August this year scoring 87.000 per cent. What was to be Bella Rose’s first championship freestyle at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina was canceled because of weather conditions.
As defending champion on Weihegold OLD–taking the title in both 2017 and 2018–Isabell needs only to start in two World Cup events to go to the final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April. She won on Emilio at the Lyon, France qualifier earlier this month.
Germany’s Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis Jr., Tryon World Equestrian Games gold medal team mates to Isabell and Bella Rose, were second on 81.860 per cent and Olympic and World Games rider Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH, owned by American Louise Leatherdale, placed third on 81.445 per cent.
Denmark’s Daniel Bachmann Andersen riding Blue Hors Zepter in the first Grand Prix Freestyle, was fourth on a score of 81.190 per cent while Benjamin Werndl of Germany on Daily Mirror, 14-year-old Westfalen gelding, posted a personal best 80.340 per cent for the fifth spot.
The results pushed Dorothee Schneider to the top of the Western European League standings with 50 points, with Benjamin Werndl lying second on 45, Daniel Bachmann Andersen in third on 35 points and Helen Langehanenberg fourth on 34 points.
This was the third of 10 Western European League qualifying competitions this season. Madrid, a newcomer to the World Cup indoor season lineup, is next on the schedule, Nov. 23-25.
