STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 16, 2018–Reigning champion Isabell Werth rode Bella Rose to victory in the World Cup Grand Prix Friday in the mare’s debut in the annual championship series. Denmark’s Daniel Bachmann Andersen on Blue Hors Zepter eased into runner-up ahead of a pair of Germans, all three separated by less than 0.6 per cent.
Isabell and Bella Rose, in their first competitions since winning team and individual gold at Tryon World Equestrian Games two months ago, were awarded 81.826 per cent for the victory.
The Westfalen mare, now 14 years old, competed here four years ago in her last competition before an absence of 3 1/2 years to deal with a soundness issue. Bella Rose, Isabell’s favorite, returned to the show ring five months ago and leaped up the world rankings to currently stand at No. 4, behind Isabell on Weihegold OLD at No. 2 and Emilio at No. 3. America’s Laura Graves and Verdades are top ranked.
Daniel Bachmann Andersen and Zepter, also a World Cup debut for the 10-year-old Oldenburg stallion, placed second on 76.826 per cent.
Dorothee Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr., team mates of Isabell and Bella Rose at Tryon, were third on 76.435 per cent and Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH were fourth on 76.261 per cent.
The Grand Prix Freestyle is scheduled for Saturday to decide points for combinations seeking a start at the World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April. Isabell, as the titleholder, does not earn points but needs to start in two events in the series.
