BONEO, Australia, Oct. 20, 2018–Matthew Dowsley and AEA Prestige won the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday with a score that for the second day in a row was the highest at a Big Tour musical performance in Australia in more than 3 1/2 years.
Matthew and the Australian-bred 13-year-old gelding (Prestige x Grand Kavalier) scored 75.790 per cent in the first Big Tour Freestyle for the pair. The result was a career high CDI score for the 53-year-old rider.
The musical ride by the pair garnered the highest score in Australia since Mary Hanna, the five-time Olympian, was awarded 75.950 per cent on Umbro at Orange, about 150 miles/256km north of Sydney, in February 2015.
The Grand Prix score of 72.456 per cent for Matthew and Prestige in the Grand Prix Friday was also the best since Mary Hanna and Umbro’s 72.521 per cent at the same show in Orange.
This World Cup event was the first for Matthew since competing Cinderella at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands in 2007, after riding on the Australian team at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany in 2006. Cinderella was euthanized in 2007 because of worsening cancer.
The victory qualifies the duo for the Pacific Asia League final at this same show grounds in January, a head-to-head competition to decide the sole representative from Down Under for the World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April.
Shannan Goodwin on Aristede placed second on 72.600 per cent with Alycia Targa on CP Dresden third on 70.710 per cent.
