LE MANS, France, Oct. 18, 2018–Great Britain’s Gareth Hughes won the CDI3* Grand Prix Thursday on Classic Briolinca and placed second on KK Woodstock in only the horse’s second Big Tour event and the rider’s first ever sweep of the top two spots in an international event.
Gareth and Briolinca, a 12-year-old KWPN mare, scored 73.565 per cent for the victory. The victory was the first outside Britain for the pair that have competed on two Nations Cup teams in three years at Grand Prix. The duo’s previous wins were in both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle at the CDI3* in Keysoe, England in March.
Gareth and KK Woodstock, a 12-year old Baden-Württemberg gelding, were awarded 70.804 per cent for second place. The only previous Big Tour event for the horse was at Hickstead, England in July when the pair placed third in both the Grand Prix and the Special.
Gareth rode DV Stenkjers Nadonna on Great Britain’s silver medal team at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and the bronze medal team at the 2013 European Championships.
Germany’s Juliette Piotrowski on Sir Diamond was third on 69.313 per cent.
