MOSCOW, SEPT. 30, 2018–Inessa Merkulova and Mister X won the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday in the first competition for the Russian pair since the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina earlier this month.

Inessa, at her family’s organized event, and the 14-year-old Russian-bred Trakehner gelding scored 79.275 per cent for the second win in the World Cup Central European League to put the pair into contention for a sixth consecutive final of the annual championship centered on the freestyle. Next year’s final will be in Gothenburg, Sweden in April.

The pair have competed for Russia in two World Games, Normandy in 2014 and Tryon this year, as well as the 2016 Olympics and the 2015 European Championships.

Russia’s Stanislav Cherednichenko on Arums, a nine-year-old Latvian gelding that was ridden by Inessa and two other riders before this same show a year ago, placed second on 74.050 per cent and to earn enough points to put the 27-year-old rider at the top of the CEL standings. Hanna Karasiova of Belarus is ranked second in the series to choose two representatives of the CEL for the final.

Elizaveta Troshenkova of Russia on Rubinio Royal, was third on 71.825 per cent.

The next CEL event is in Tallinn, Estonia next week, one of 13 qualifiers scheduled in the region this competition year.
