LEUDELANGE, Luxembourg, July 6, 2017–Steffen Peters on Rosamunde and Ashley Holzer on Havanna made it one-two in the CDI4* Grand Prix Friday, at the second of three European events to select the American team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in two months.

Steffen and the 11-year-old Rhinelander mare were awarded 75.652 per cent, the highest score for the pair in two years.

Ashley and Havanna, 11-year-old Hanoverian mare, placed second on 71.935 per cent.

Luxembourg’s Sascha Schulz on Dragao was third on 71.913 per cent.

“Rosie was today even better than in Rotterdam,” Steffen told dressage-news.com. “A clean test with a lot of controlled power. A few nines on the trot extensions and canter pirouettes.

“This is exactly the feeling I was looking for. And I hope that Rosie and I can support the US team with another ride like this in Aachen.”

Ashley, the Canadian Olympian who now rides for the United States and is on her first American team tour, said:

“The US program has been so helpful. It truly has made all the difference. She is really improving with Robert’s (Dover) and Debbie’s (McDonald) help. The support we as US riders receive is over the top.”

The results came two weeks before the premier World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany that will decide the four combinations for The Dutta Corp. team to start at Tryon with the goal of returning to the medals podium for the first time since 2006 at a WEG that are held once every four years.

And the initial results here reversed the scoring at Rotterdam, Netherlands where two judges–Holland’s Mariette Sanders van Gansewinkel and Finland’s Maria Colliander between them placed American riders last by significant margins in both the CDIO5* Nations Cup and the CDI3* Grand Prix.

Laura Graves who was to compete her world No. 2 mount Verdades here opted to focus on training at the American base in Belgium ahead of Aachen where in 2017 she became the first and still only combination to beat world No. 1 Isabell Werth on Weihegold OLD since the 2016 Olympics. The American pair did it in the Grand Prix Special, then repeated the feat in the Grand Prix at the World Cup Final in Paris in April–still the only pair to best Germany’s top partnership.

Laura and Verdades have ranked in the world’s top five for almost two years, longer than any other American combination since the current world ranking format was impemented more than a decade ago.

For Steffen of San Diego, California and Rosamunde, the victory came in the fifth year of international competition for the duo ranked 26th in the world. Rosamunde was given a break of several months after the World Cup in Omaha, Nebraska in 2017 and has returned this year appearing likely to go to his fourth straight world championships–winning team bronze in 2006 and individual and freestyle bronze in 2010.
