FRITZENS, Austria, June 29, 2018–Bella Rose made a remarkable return to competition Friday when Isabell Werth rode the mare to victory in the CDI4* Grand Prix Friday after almost four years away dealing with a soundness issue.
“This is perhaps the most beautiful day in my riding life,” Isabell said after the ride that earned 77.522 per cent and the unanimous choice of the five judges for first place.
Isabell had not competed the Westfalen mare she has rated as the best horse she has ever ridden, since November, 2014.
Team mate Dorothee Schneider on Faustus placed second on 74.370 per cent. Great Britain’s Emile Faurie on Dono di Maggio was third on 74.022 per cent.
The career of Bella Rose, now 14 years oid, appeared to screech to a halt after a spectacular start that saw the pair lead the German team to gold at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, placing second in the Grand Prix behind Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro. In 16 starts over 18 months at Big Tour, Isabell and Bella Rose (Belissimo x Cacir AA) logged nine victories.
Isabell, the only rider in history to have scored at least 80 per cent on three different horses, Bella Rose one of them, and currently ranked No. 1 in the world on Weihegold OLD, No. 3 on Emilio and No. 6 on Don Johnson FRH, refused to give up on the mare. Like so many of her horses, she developed Bella Rose from a youngster to top sport.
The return of Bella Rose, owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze, came 1,314 days after their previous competition, at Stuttgart, Germany. At the time, the duo was ranked sixth in the world.
The performance was emotional for Isabell.
