ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 21, 2018–Edward Gal rode Glock’s Zonik to victory in the CDIO5* Grand Prix Thursday to lead the Netherlands to the top spot of the Nations Cup with Sweden lying second and the United States third after the first of three rounds to decide the winner.

Edward and Zonik, in the first team competition for the 10-year-old Danish Warmblood stallion but did compete at the World Cup Final in Paris three months ago, scored 76.957 per cent. Emmelie Scholtens on Apache was awarded 74.261 per cent for fourth place and Hans Peter Minderhoud on Glock’s Dream Boy in eighth place on 73.000 per cent. Under the new scoring format that awards points for placings  so the team with the fewest points leads, the Netherlands is in first with 13 points..

Sweden’s 2017 European Championship  combination of Therese Nilshagen on Dante Weltino OLD was second individually on 76.152 per cent with team mate and multi Olympian Patrik Kittel on Well Done de la Roche CMF third on 75.804 per cent and fellow 2016 Olympic partnership of  Juliette Ramel  on Buriel K.H. placed 10th on 71.457 per cent to give the country a total of 16 points.

Steffen Peters on Rosamunde, also in the 11-year-old Rhinelander mare’s first team competition, was the leading pair for the United States with 74.130 per cent for fifth place individually. Adrienne Lyle on Salvino was awarded 73,913 per cent for sixth place and Kasey Perry-Glass on Dublet slotted into seventh on 73.065 per cent for a team total of 18 points.

Steffen and Rosamunde returned to international level competition in April after a break from top sport of almost a year. The pair began Grand Prix in 2015 and competed in California and Florida as well as Europe as well as the World Cup Final in Omaha in 2017.

This Nations Cup, midway in the series of seven competitions in Europe and the United States, will be decided Saturday by two combinations from each competing in the Grand Prix Special and one in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Nations Cup are scheduled for Falsterbo, Sweden, Aachen, Germany and Hickstead, England in the next two months.

The United States won this event last year while Sweden went on to claim the series title.

Edward said that Zonik has improved a lot since beginning Grand Prix a year ago with more collection and self-carriage.

However, the small arena used for the Grand Prix with full stands just feet from the side of the riding arena was spooky for Zonik, and he would be glad to be in the main more spacious ring for Saturday night’s competition.the Special and Freestyle.

The result was uncertain until the last of the 26 starters–Patrik Kittel on Well Done.

“This horse is very young,” he said, “and we didn’t expect anything. When you go last it’s never so easy, either.”

He said he was amazed how calm was Well Done in the compact arena, that he enjoyed as the rider because it created more atmosphere.
