BALVE, Germany, June 10, 2018–Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo won the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday to complete a sweep of the German Championships. Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD, the world’s No. 1 combination that was runner-up in the Grand Prix and Special, did not compete in the musical performance.
Sönke and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding, ranked No. 4 in the world, were awarded 88.425 per cent in the national level competition with an all-German panel of five judges, shy of their personal best of 90.614 per cent at the European Championship last August. The 23-year-old rider and his Olympic team gold medal partner won the Grand Prix Friday and the Special Saturday, Separate medals are awarded for the Special and the Freestyle–and these were the first gold medals for the.winning duo at senior level.
Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis Jr. placed second on 82.975 per cent with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSK Dalera BB third on 82.675 per cent.
Dorothee put the performances by Sönke and Cosmo into perspective: “My goal today was to be second behind Sönke, because he plays in a league of his own. I’ve done that, I’m super happy with silver. And I am very happy that Sammy is in such a top condition.”
The three top placed pairs plus Isabell and Weihegold were named to the German Nations Cup team for Aachen, Germany next month that will decide the team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September.
Absent from these championships were 2016 Olympic team gold medalists Kristina Bröring-Sprehe’s Desperados FRH and Dorothee Schneider’s Showtime FRH as well as Isabell Werth’s Emilio that was the the 2017 champion, all horses recovering from injuries, and Helen Langehanenberg with Damsey FRH as the rider is pregnant.
