AACHEN, Germany, May 28, 2018–Great Britain’s Gareth Hughes and Don Carissimo won the Aachen Dressage Days CDI3* Grand Prix Monday for the second victory in 20 months at Big Tour.

Gareth and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding were awarded 72.696 per cent for the win in a lineup of 30 starting combinations, many seeking to earn a start at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September. The duo’s sole victory before this week was in the Netherlands in December, 2016.

Gareth and Don Carissimo competed at Small Tour in 2015 and moved up to Grand Prix the following year. The pair were named to the British team for the European Championship last summer but the horse sustained a minor injury after arriving in Gothenburg, Sweden and withdrew before the start of competition.

Portugal’s Maria Caetano on the 11-year-old Lusitano stallion Coroado was second on 70.500 per cent and the Netherlands’ Tosca Visser van der Meulen on Asther de Jeu third on 70.457 per cent.

Japan’s Kazuki Sado on Barolo was awarded 66.304 per cent for the pair’s second World Games qualifying score, the fourth Japanese combination to do so. The duo were awarded the first qualifying result a month ago at this same show grounds.

Other Japanese combinations to have earned at least two qualifying results so far are Kiichi Harada on Egistar, Akane Kuroki on Toots and Masanao Takahashi on Rubicon Unitechno.

South Africa’s Gretha Ferreira on Lertevangs Lavinia with a score of 66.587 per cent posted the pair’s first WEG qualifying result.

Tanya Seymour on Ramoneur is the only South African duo to have logged the required qualifying scores so far.
