COMPIÈGNE, France, May 19, 2018–Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour rode Cassidy to an easy win in the Nations Cup Grand Prix Saturday but not enough to dent a commanding lead by Sweden in the first stage of the team competition.

Cathrine on Cassidy, 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding ranked No. 4 in the world, scored 79.696 per cent for the win. The pair that led Denmark to team silver and took individual and freestyle bronze medals at the 2017 European Championships are focused on the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September.

Juliette Ramel on Buriel K.H. scoring 74.783 per cent for second place, Patrik Kittel on Well Done de la Roche CMF on 74.543 per cent for third and Antonia Ramel on Brother de Jeu on 72.326 per cent for fifth gave Sweden a huge lead in the team event.

This was also the first competition under the French flag for Morgan Barbançon Mestre, 25, who rode Sir Donnerhall II OLD for a score of 69.000 per cent for 13th place, the top result for France. Morgan, who switched from riding for Spain last month, brought with her a ranking of No. 52 in the world on Sir Donnerhall, making the pair the highest on the world rankings for France.

Denmark was standing second, the Netherlands third, Great Britain fourth, Belgium fifth, France sixth and Switzerland seventh in the second leg of the trans-Atlantic series of seven Nations Cups. The first event in Wellington, Florida in March was won by the United States, with Canada second and Australia third.

The event will be decided by results in the Grand Prix Special and the Freestyle. A new scoring system was implemented this year that awards points for the placings of combinations so teams with the lowest total points are ranked highest. The previous system used the average of the best scores, such as for the three highest per nation in the Grand Prix.
