SEGOVIA, Spain, May 11, 2018–Spain’s Olympic combination combination of Claudio Castilla Ruiz and Alcaide won the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday in the first round to decide the team of four riders and horses for the World Equestrian Games starting in Tryon, North Carolina exactly four months.
Juan Matute, Jr., 20 years old and successful in youth championships who is campaigning for a place on the team, placed third on Quantico Ymas and fourth on Don Diego Ymas after winning the Young Rider team test.
Claudio and the 13-year-old Spanish-bred stallion that competed for Spain at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 European Championships, scored 71.957 per cent for the victory, the second highest Grand Prix result for the pair in four years at Big Tour.
José Antonio Garcia Mena on Benzi Landro placed second on 70.565 per cent.
Juan Matute, a resident of Wellington, Florida for more than a decade and who recently became an American citizen but will continue to ride for Spain, was awarded 70.435 per cent for third place on Quantico and 69.109 per cent for Don Diego for fourth place, to wrap up a Spanish sweep of the top four places. Juan, an online college student, this year will start spending significantly more time in Europe as he pursues a career in high performance dressage.
This CDI came after newly appointed team coach, German Rudolf Zeillinger, conducted a training and observation session here. The next key events in WEG team selection are the Spanish championships in Madrid with the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany in July.
