WINDSOR, England, May 10, 2018–Charlotte Dujardin and Mount St. John Freestyle in only their second Big Tour event won the Windsor CDI4* Grand Prix Thursday with Carl Hester and Hawtins Delicato runner-up with both combinations producing performances to raise Great Britain’s hopes for the World Equestrian Games just four months away.
Charlotte and the nine-year-old Hanoverian mare (Fidermark x Donnerhall) scored 78.587 per cent to surpass the pair’s debut Grand Prix result of 75.152 per cent in the Netherlands a month ago.
Carl Hester and Hawtins Delicato made their international debut to place second on 75.717 per cent and, with Charlotte and Freestyle, the 2017 British Horse of the Year Future Elite Championship, are the top contenders for the British team for the world championships in Tryon, North Carolina in September.
Carl, describing the 10-year-old British-bred Hanoverian gelding as “hot and sensitive,” said the goal was to give Hawtins Delicato confidence as they prepare for the WEG. The pair competed at national Grand Prix, but until Thursday the only international events were successful small tour with Charlotte Dujardin last year.
It was also the first CDI Big Tour for Carl since riding Nip Tuck, his 2016 Olympic mount, at the European Championships more than eight months ago.
Richard Davison on Bubblingh was third on 70.826 per cent while Gareth Hughes riding Don Carrissimo in the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding’s first international show in a year–the duo were named to the British team at last summer’s Europeans but had to withdraw because of an injury to the horse–were fourth on 70.739 per cent.
