PARIS, April 13, 2018–Laura Graves of the United States rode Verdades to a personal best score to win the World Cup Grand Prix Friday, beating defending champion Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD. The Freestyle to decide the championship is scheduled for Saturday.

The score of 81.413 per cent for Laura and her 16-year-old gelding was the highest ever for an American in international competition, surpassing a mark of 81.383 per that was awarded Steffen Peters and Ravel in January 2012, three years after the pair won the World Cup, only the second American to do so.

Isabell and Weihegold, the No. 1 ranked combination in the world and looking to capture her fourth World Cup title, scored 78.261 per cent to be runner-up–only the second time since the 2016 Olympics where the pair won team gold, and both times by Laura and the 16-year-old KWPN gelding that Laura has trained from three years old to Grand Prix. The first time was in the Grand Prix Special at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany last July.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB placed third–as they have in two previous World Cups–with 75.668 per cent.

Maribel Alonso of Mexico, the judge at C and who has seen the pair compete several times, described the ride as “amazing” with power and confidence in the horse and Laura riding every step in an error-free ride that was her first final in Europe in the annual individual world championship. She competed at Las Vegas in 2015 and Omaha last year where she was runner-up to Isabell and Weihegold.

Laura received a mark of 10 from Maribel for the final halt, the only maximum award and for rider’s position and seat; correctness and effect of the aids (the only collective mark now given) the duo were given two 9.5s, four 9s and one 8.5.

Laura, 30 years old and based in Geneva, Florida, an Orlando area community, said that Verdades has more to produce and she is planning for it to happen at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September that she hopes will contribute to a medal for the United States.

Asked how she felt going into Saturday’s freestyle against Isabell, Laura replied: “It feels very scary. It’s a little scary with such a fierce competitor because she will ride even harder tomorrow.”

Although qualifying in Wellington for the World Cup was all outdoors while in Europe all the competitions are indoors that presented a very different venue for Verdades, or “Diddy,” as she calls the horse she owns with her personal and business partner, Curt Maes, and a different set of experiences for herself.

However, with the Global Dressage Festival of seven CDIs in winter in Wellington, Florida just three hours from her home, the only reason for competing outside her home state is to qualify for championships and to ride against the best in the world.

“I like the situation,” she said, “because I want to be against tougher competition.”

She is still weighing her schedule after Paris, whether to go to Europe again before the World Games.

The 48-year-old Isabell, the most successful equestrian in Olympic history, said of her loss to Laura: “We are in France so c’est la vie. It was not planned to have it like this. We will try tomorrow to make it as hard as possible for Laura. We’ll try all the risks I can and hope that Weihegold will be better focused than today.”

Asked why she chose Weihegold over Emilio that she also qualified, she quipped: “When I call home I’m sure Emilio will laugh and say, ‘it’s your fault.’ I hope tomorrow will show it was the right decision.”
