GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Feb. 22, 2018–Denmark’s European Championship star Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy rode their first 80 per cent Grand Prix to beat Germany’s Isabell Werth and Emilio in the World Cup Grand Prix Thursday.
Cathrine, who has grown up with the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding, was awarded 80.674 per cent to become only the 15th rider in the history of the sport–and the first Scandinavian–to achieve at least 80 per cent.
There were huge disparities in the marks for Isabell and Emilio, ranked No. 3 in the world, with Francis Verbeek of the Netherlands awarding 75.870 per cent at the low end and Peter Holler of Germany giving 84.348 per cent with an overall result of 79.717 per cent from the panel of five judges.
Patrik Kittel, the Swedish Olympian who is leading the Western European standings, was third on Delaunay OLD on a score of 75.413 per cent.
This is the eighth of nine qualifiers in Western Europe for the World Cup Final in Paris in April. The freestyle Friday will determine standings with one more event to go.
Cathrine, 26 years old and Cassidy, ranked fifth in the world, were stars in juniors almost a decade ago then moved up to young riders then the Under-25 division before starting international Big Tour in 2015.
The pair were the top scoring members of the Danish team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, ranked 13th overall.
The duo led Denmark to European Championship team silver in this same city last year, as well as winning both individual and freestyle bronze behind German superstars Isabell Werth on Weihegold OLD, No. 1 in the world, and her team mates Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo, No. 2 in the world.
