FRANKFURT, Germany, Dec. 16, 2017–Isabell Werth rode the aptly named QC Flamboyant OLD to victory in the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal for the superstar’s fourth German championship for small tour horses, twice as many as any other combination. Hubertus Schmidt on the talented stallion Escolar was a close second in the 26th year of the series.
Isabell and the nine-year-old Oldenberg gelding (Fidertanz x De Niro) scored 77.780 per cent for the win, more than two decades after she took this title for seven to nine-year-old horses for the first time on Aurelius in 1995. She won on Gigolo in 1996 and El Santo in 2008.
Isabell and Flamboyant were awarded a series record score of 81.512 per cent in their qualifying competition beating the previous best of 81.170 per cent set by Nadine Capellmann on Elvis at the 2004 final then going on to win team gold at the 2008 Olympics and the 2006 World Equestrian Games.
Hubertus Schmidt, one of Germany’s most accomplished trainers and competitors with team gold at the 2004 Olympics and 2006 World Games, scored 77.195 per cent on the eight-year-old Westfalen Escolar for reserve champion.
Matthias Bouten on Quantum Vis MW was third on 76.341 per cent and also placed fourth on Bodyguard with a score of 74.146 per cent.
Riders who have won the burg-pokal twice since its debut in 1992 are Nicole Uphoff, Nadine Capellmann, Karin Rehbein and Carola Koppelmann.
