STOCKHOLM, Dec. 3, 2017–Isabell Werth and Emilio won the Saab Top Ten CDI5* Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday, leading all three top placegetters to post personal best scores in the world’s single richest dressage competition.
Isabell and the 11-year-old Westfalen gelding scored 86.875 per cent for the win, beating the previous high freestyle mark of 86.115 set exactly a month ago that helped boost the German partnership to No. 3 in the world in the latest rankings released two days ago .
“The way Emilio did it today was perfect,” said Isabell. “It’s not easy to warm up here; there is a lot to see and hear. I’m very happy with this weekend. It’s something special with this audience here in Stockholm, they have the exact feeling of when they can clap or not and this gave us just a super finish.”.
Patrik Kittel, the Swedish multi-Olympian and the driving force behind this event, rode Deja, his 2016 Olympic mount, to second place on 83.000 per cent, surpassing the duo’s previous best of 82.550 per cent logged in March 2016.
Helen Langehanenberg and Damsey FRH, German team mates of Isabell’s at this summer’s European Championships, turned in a result of 82.655 per cent to improve on the 80.350 per cent set in May this year that was their previous best.
Damsey is a 15-year-old Hanoverian stallion that Helen began competing at Big Tour in April 2016 and stands 10th in the world. The horse is owned by Americans Louise Leatherdale of Leatherdale Farms in Long Lake, Minnesota and Susanne Meyer.
“I am super happy with my test,” she said. “Damsey was so fresh but relaxed today. When we entered the arena he just wanted to do this.
“I don’t know what I could have done better. I’m ending up third today. I hadn’t really expected that. I love doing the freestyle and the horse was just perfect. I’m going home very happy after today’s show and will go to sleep with a smile tonight.”
Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy, the Danish Olympic and Euroean Championship team pair that beat Isabell on Don Johnson for the first time earlier this winter and came within 0.400 per cent of equalling the German pair in the Grand Prix, placed fourth on 82.100 per cent.
The event boasted the world’s single richest dressage company with total prize money of €158,000 (US$187,000) and a Volkswagen car for the Grand Prix and Freestyle.
“The coolest thing for me,” said Patrik, “was that when you work with something for a very long time and it comes out like this, like all I have been hoping for… It is really a very good day at the office.”
