STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 18, 2017–Isabell Werth dominated the Stuttgart German Masters Saturday with victory on Weihegold OLD in the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle and just hours earlier taking the CDI4* Grand Prix on Don Johnson FRH.
Isabell, with more Olympic medals than any equestrian in history and her world No. 1 partner scored 87.575 per cent for the 16th victory in 17 starts since the 2016 Olympics. This was the first of two starts required for Isabell and the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare to go to Paris next April to defend the World Cup won at Omaha. Isabell has also ridden Emilio and Don Johnson as backups in the quest to add to her three World Cup titles.
“Weihe has had such a great year, and after Gothenburg we gave her a long break but we thought it would be lovely to bring her to Stuttgart for the home crowd to see her and it was really nice,” Isabell said. “She’s only been working lightly for the last few weeks so we didn’t take the full risk like we did in Aachen or Gothenburg this summer, but I’m very happy with how she went, it was a great day.”
Dorothee Schneider, Olympic and championship team mate, rode Sammy Davis jr to a personal best score of 82.805 per cent for second place.
Fellow German and previous world No. 1 Helen Langehanenberg was third on Damsey FRH on 79.615 per cent.
“He was super-fresh but really happy to be out competing and really keen to perform,” she said of 15-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Louise Leatherdale of Long Lake, Minnesota. “He really came to life in his test and it’s great for an older horse like him to be still enjoying competition so much.”
Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén on Paridon Magi placed fourth on 78.280 per cent.
German world and European championship team gold medal rider Fabienne Lütkemeier rode Fabregaz in the Big Tour Freestyle debut for the 10-year-old German Sport Horse gelding to rack up a score of 78.190 per cent for fifth. The pair began Grand Prix in March, 2016.
Belinda Weinbauer and Söhnlein Brilliant MJ also posted a personal best 76.950 per cent for seventh, eclipsing their previous high of 76.175 per cent set in March by the top ranked Austrian combination.
Swedish Olympian Patrik Kittel remains atop the Western European League standings with 54 points though he did not compete here, the third of nine qualifiers for the division.
Switzerland’s Marcela Krinke Susmelj and Spain’s Morgan Barbançon Mestre stood second while the top points for Dorothee Schneider moved her to fourth, according to unofficial rankings.
The next World Cup event is Salzburg, Austria Dec. 6-10.
Isabell and Don Johnson FRH, ranked No. 6 in the world, earlier Saturday won the CDI4* Grand Prix to qualify for the Grand Prix Special with a score of 75.560 per cent.
Fellow Germans Fabienne Lütkemeier on D’Agostino FRH was second on 74.680 per cent and Bernadette Brune on Spirit of the Age OLD third on 72.200 per cent.
