Inge Bastian of Germany, the breeder of Weihegold OLD ridden by Isabell Werth as the world’s top ranked partnership, was named No. 1 breeder in 2017 by the Rolex/World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses. KWPN, the Dutch studbook, returned to the top of the standings, boosted by the performances of Cosmo ridden by Sönke Rothenberger and Verdades competed by Laura Graves, ranked second and third, respectively, for breeders.

The sire of the year will be announced next month. De Niro, the sire of the year in 2016, 2015, 2013 and 2012, died Tuesday at the age of 24. Among the offspring of the Hanoverian stallion were Desperados, Delgado, D’Agostino, Dablino and Voice.

Weihegold accumulated 3026 ranking points to place the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare (Don Schufro x Sandro Hit) at the top of the breeder standings. The breeders of Cosmo ridden by Sönke Rothenberger for Germany and Verdades competed by Laura Graves of the United States were ranked second and third.

KWPN, that was edged by the Hanoverian Verband out as the top studbook in 2016 after leading the standings for seven years, returned to the top for 2017. The Hanoverian Verband was second and Oldenburg third.
