More than $150,000 has been donated so far to the United States Equestrian Federation equine disaster relief fund to help horses caught in record torrential rains as a result of “Harvey” in the area of Houston, Texas.
All of the funds will be turned over to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Texas A&M University, the Texas Equine Veterinary Association and other equine rescue organizations.
“The outpouring from the equine community has been unbelievable,” said Sarah Green, Executive Director for the Texas vet group. “There has been immediate response from people across the country, even while the storm was still going on, to provide supplies. There is a long road ahead, but all of the support will make a huge difference.”
Within the first 24 hours of the appeal for help, donations reached $50,000, and a donor offered to match the next $25,000 in funds given. Since that time, the disaster fund has received a donation of $10,000 from Ariat, a pledge from the equine charity Brooke USA for a dollar-for-dollar match on the next $25,000 donated, with the goal of reaching $200,000.
“USEF is overwhelmed by the response,” USEF CEO Bill Moroney said. “We are thankful for those who have stepped forward and not just given monetary donations, but also for those organizations and individuals who are in Houston and the surrounding areas, in the trenches, aiding one another and helping in the recovery. We are proud to be a small part of the relief efforts and could not have done even that without the support of those who are giving in so many ways.”
The USEF has partnered with:
The American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation that has launched a website that provides multiple avenues for monetary giving. Additionally, a supply list is posted online and specific donation hours have been set for those located in the Kentucky area;
The Texas Equine Veterinary Association has specified donation hubs around the state for those looking to donate feed, supplies, buckets, halters, shavings and other supplies. Click here to find your nearest hub. Individuals interested in volunteering their barn, stalls, or transportation services should contact office.teva@gmail.com;
Texas A&M University Veterinary Emergency Team ensures that animals impacted by disasters such as Hurricane Harvey have a chance at survival and veterinary care. There are several avenues for giving to their veterinary emergency team.
