GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Aug. 26, 2017–Juan Matute, Jr., based in Florida where he has become a teenage dressage star, won the Lövsta Future Challenge International Under-25 Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday for a sweep of the inaugural event staged alongside the European Championships.

Competing for the first time in Sweden, the 19-year-old Juan on Quantico scored 78.200 per cent for the win, two days after capturing the Grand Prix in a field of 11 starting combinations from five nations.

Lina Dolk, a 20-year-old from Sweden on Biggles scored 74.400 per cent for second as she was in the Grand Prix. Jill Huybregts of the Netherlands on Zamacho Z was third on 73.100 per cent.

Juan, the son of three-time Olympian for Spain and based in Wellington, Florida, travels to Austria early next week for the European Under-25 Championships, being staged for the second year as a bridge between youth divisions and the senior ranks.

The event here was created to further develop the sport among youth dressage and jumping in Sweden that is supported substantially by Antonia Ax:son Johnson whose Lövsta stud is also the base for seven-time Swedish Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén. Antonio is also a major sponsor of dressage in the United States, at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington and the Central Park Horse Show in New York.

Juan won a lot of fans in Gothenburg this week as an enthusiastic ambassador for dressage.

He drew a big cheer in the awards ceremony when he was being interviewed after the ride on the 11-year-old gelding by speaking highly of the experience here and ending with a shouted, “Thank You, Sweden!” and pumping his fist in the air.

Juan started online college just a month ago planning to eventually study international business.

Although he wants the formal education, he said he doesn’t want it to take away from his riding that has been successful in both juniors and young riders as well as Under-25 and Big Tour that he started in Wellington last winter.

“Education is very important,” he said. “I think it really makes you improve as an athlete because you learn to think from a different perspective. If you see only the tree in front of you, you don’t see the forest.”

Being in Gothenburg was important to be able to perform at the same venue as the European championships of dressage and jumping to spend a week around the continent’s top riders.

“I learn from them,” he said, “I’m like a sponge and absorb all this. I feel this experience has benefited me 1,000 times over.”

He said Wellington has been “super” and a “unique experience” to develop as the concentration of dressage events throughout the winter enable him to become comfortable in the competition arena and develop confidence as preparation for the more intensely competitive European circuit.
