ERMELO, Netherlands, Aug. 3, 2017–Fiontini was in position to complete the world young horse championship triple when Severo Jurado Lopez rode the Danish Warmblood mare to victory Thursday in the preliminary test in only the second year of the seven-year-old title.
Fiontini (Fassbinder x Romanov), world champion at both five and six years old ridden by Severo, scored 88.389 per cent for the seven-year-old division win in the starting lineup of 39 horses and riders from 18 countries.
The pair is looking to follow the lead taken by Sezuan, the Danish Warmblood stallion ridden by German Olympian Dorothee Schneider. Dorothee rode Sezuan (Blue Hors Zack x Don Schufro) to the championship as a five-year-old and a six-year-old and then as a seven-year-old in the inaugural year of that division in 2016.
President’s First Apple, a KWPN stallion, was ridden by Patrick van de Meer of the Netherlands to second place on 81.286 per cent. Sultan des Paluds, a Hanoverian gelding, with Kirsten Brouwer aboard, also of the Netherlands, was third on 81.239 per cent.
