The United States offered to step back from bidding for the 2024 Olympics leaving the way for Paris to host the Games that year in exchange for America’s second largest city becoming the host in 2028.
The International Olympic Committee will meet in September to consider the offer by Los Angeles and the U.S. Olympic Committee and are considered likely to vote to approve at a time when the world’s largest sporting event is considered to have lost some of its luster.
The IOC has not yet decided which sports to include in the lineup but equestrian has been included in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and the Paris and Los Angeles organizing committees have included them in their proposals.
The IOC usually awards hosting rights to the Olympics seven years in advance of the Games.
However, with a growing number of cities unwilling to spend lavishly for the Olympics and with Paris and Los Angeles threatening to pull their bids if they were not successful this time, the IOC was left with few options.
For Paris, the 2024 Games would mark the 100th birthday of the last time the French capital hosted the Olympics. It also hosted the Games in 1900.
Los Angeles was the host in 1932 and 1984. With 2028, Los Angeles would have hosted the modern Olympics, as many as both Paris and London.
