ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 24, 2017–The Netherlands’ Emmelie Scholtens on Apache won their debut Grand Prix Special for the second straight victory in this CDI3* while American riders were bedeviled by a falling spectator and the raising of dozens of umbrellas in a rain burst. Edward Gal and Glock’s Zonik won their debut CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle.

Emmelie and the 12-year-old KWPN stallion on which she won the Grand Prix Friday took the Special on a score of 72.764 per cent for the most successful of six Big Tour events in the past two years. The pair posted a personal best in Grand Prix but had not previously competed in a CDI Special.

Adelinde Cornelissen on Aqiedo, also a 12-year-old KWPN stallion, placed second 71.882 per cent. Adelinde, former No. 1 in the world on the now-retired Parzival, recovered from the Grand Prix on Aqiedo in which the horse showed resistance that led to a 16th place finish.

Belgium’s Fanny Verliefden on the big-moving 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion Indoctro V.D. Steenblok placed third on 68.627 per cent.

Shelly Francis of Loxahatchee, Florida on Doktor finished fourth on 69.274 per cent, but she got the biggest applause for her handling of a spectator falling noisily in the stands directly in front of the pair. The spectator stands in the newly created competition arena that was converted from a warmup ring, are just three feet/one meter from the edge of the arena railings.

The American combination were passing A when the spectator fell amidst several others, creating considerable noise and movement as many surrounding him leaped to their feet to help.

Shelly stopped Doktor who was staring at the ruckus and after the fallen spectator appeared alright continued on with the horse clearly more tense for the one-tempi changes. The pair repeated the movement.

“Maybe I should have received bonus points,” Shelly joked at the end of the ride.

Adrienne Lyle on Salvino was the next combination into the arena and what had been intermittent drizzle turned into a burst of heavy rain leading to spectators raising umbrellas.

Salvino, a 10-year-old Hanoverian stallion who has never before competed in the rain and appeared startled by the sudden opening of dozens of umbrellas, made several errors and scored 66.372 per cent for seventh place.

Adrienne of Ketchum, Idaho and Salvino appeared in the maiden European CDI for the partnership and only their second international level event.

Charlotte Jorst of Reno, Nevada and Kastel’s Nintendo, the third American combination in the Special, placed sixth on 66.862 per cent.

Edward Gal and the nine-year-old Glock’s Zonik won their debut Grand Prix Freestyle on a score of 77.450 per cent.

The pair performed to the music created by Joost Peters for Glock’s Undercover in only the fourth Big Tour start–two at Roosendaal, Netherlands three weeks ago and Friday in the Grand Prix.

Zonik, a Danish Warmblood stallion, was not at his best in the Grand Prix having spent two restless nights before the competition.

Fellow Dutch riders Danielle Heijkoop on Siro placed second on 74.075 per cent and Patrick van der Meer on Zippo was third on 73.860 per cent.
