BALVE, Germany, June 9, 2017–Isabell Werth rode Emilio to victory in the German Championships Grand Prix Friday after her Olympic team gold medal mount Weihegold OLD was withdrawn with a bacterial infection.
Isabell and the 11-year-old Westfalen gelding on which she is ranked No. 6 in the world scored 82.060 per cent for the win in the championships that are a national level competition and a key qualifying event for the German team for the European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden in August.
Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo, the only one of the four combinations that won team gold at the 2016 Olympics able to compete here, placed second on 79.700 per cent.
In addition to Weihegold being withdrawn by Isabell earlier this week, Showtime FRH ridden by Dorothee Schneider and the 2016 championship pair and Desperados FRH ridden by Kristina Bröring-Sprehe, were recovering from injuries.
Hubertus Schmidt on Imperio was third on 76.340 per cent.
