HAGEN, Germany, May 1, 2017–German Olympic team gold medal partnership of Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo posted a career high score of 81.686 per cent to win Horses & Dreams CDI4* Grand Prix Special Monday.
The result for Sönke and the 10 year-old KWPN gelding ranked No. 9 in the world was the first above 80 per cent in a career from young riders through the Rio Olympics last summer and easily surpassed the pair’s previous best Grand Prix Special result of 79.569 per cent. The duo won the Grand Prix on Sunday.
This was only the second competition for Sonke, 22 years old, and Cosmo (Van Gogh x Fruhling Lanjonker) since last year’s Olympics. He has put his international jumping career on hold to focus on college studies and dressage.
“I am more than satisfied! Cosmo is one of the youngest horses in this class, and I am incredibly proud of how he has developed over the winter and how he performed here,” Sonke said after the ride.
The goal for this year was to be selected for the team for the European Championships in Gthenburg, Sweden Aug. 22-27.
And he he set another goal: “We are now working on the fact that everything is even more self-evident and of course I’d like to be part of the club of those who have also broken the 80 per cent in the Grand Prix.” The “80% Club” was created by dressage-news.com to honor riders attaining that level at Grand Prix–a mark achieved by only 15 riders in the history of the sport.
The pair began competing at international young riders in early 2014, led Germany to European Young Rider Championship team gold later the same year and moved up to Grand Pix in 2015.
The family of Sonke and his highly successful sisters, Sanneke and Semmieke, tentatively plan compete at next winter’s Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida ahead of the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September, 2018.
Team mate Isabell Werth, the winner of 10 Olympic medals, more than any other equestrian in history, placed second on Emilio with a score of 80.627 per cent.
Great Britain’s Emile Faurie on Weekend Fun posted a personal best 74.137 per cent to place third.
