VALENCIA, Spain, Mar. 12, 2017–Sönke Rothenberger on Favourit captured the CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday for a sweep of the Big Tour event.

The German Olympic team gold medal rider and the 18-year-old Rhinelander gelding scored 77.800 per cent for the win with Portugal’s Maria Caetano on Coroado second on 75.250 per cent and Alejandro Asencio Mendez of Spain on Dalio IX third on 70.525 per cent with only three starting combinations.

Sönke and Cosmo, his Rio partner, won the Grand Prix and the Special in their return to competition after the Games.

He placed second in the Grand Prix on Favourit that he began riding in June, 2014.

His sister, Sanneke, competed Favourit for a year after the horse was acquired by the Rothenberger family in 2012 following a successful career with Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén. Tinne rode the horse for Sweden at the 2009 European Championships and the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky as well as the 2010 World Cup Final.
