s-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, Mar. 11, 2017–Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Flirt produced a lifetime best performance to win the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday to head to the Final in Omaha to defend his title at the end of this month.
The result of 84.890 per cent for Hans Peter and the 16-year-old Swiss Warmblood gelding brought to an end what would have been a perfect season for Isabell Werth and Emilio that placed second on 83.300 per cent.
This competition was the last of the nine Western European qualifying competitions in which Isabell competed in the six that are permitted, winning all but this last one on three different horses.
Only the World Cup Freestyle in Burbank, California later Saturday–it will have no impact on standings–is to go to wrap up global competitions for the first final ever to be held in Omaha in America’s heartland.
The new freestyle from Hans Peter brought the packed stadium to its feet and is expected to challenge the German superstar ranked No. 1 in the world on Weihegold OLD for the 32nd World Cup title Mar. 27-April 2. Weihegold was Isabell’s Olympic team gold and individual silver medal mount in Rio de Janeiro last summer.
The previous best result–and also career high–for Hans Peter and Flirt was 82.357 per cent, posted when the pair won their first title in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2016.
“It’s going to be a really tough job to win again because the line-up is even better than last year,” Hans Peter said, “but my horse is in great form, and I’m definitely going for a place on the podium.
“When we put this floorplan together I showed a video to some friends and everyone said it looked really good. Today Flirt felt great in the warm-up and I knew I was in with a chance when I was the last to go and Isabell had made some mistakes.”
For Isabell, this was only the third time not to win in 24 starts on four different horses since the Olympics when she brought her tally of medals to 10, the most of any equestrian in more than a century of the modern Games.
“I was really happy with my horse,” Isabell said, “he was in super shape especially in the Grand Prix. Unfortunately in the Freestyle there were mistakes in the extended trot and the two tempis but the horse was always focused. Emilio still needs to grow up a bit with the Freestyle but I was very pleased with him.”
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, who placed third in Zaire-E, said she still plans to take Unee BB to Omaha. She rode Unee to third place in the 2015 World Cup Final in Las Vegas.
She’ll then take a break from competition as she will have her first child in August.
The United States’ Laura Graves on Verdades, ranked No. 4 in the world and following a Florida winter posting their highest scores, are also expected to be in the final mix for the only annual global dressage championship.
Edward Gal on Glock’s Voice also used this last competition in Western Europe score 78.520 per cent and earn a start in Omaha. Edward won the World Cup on Totilas in 2010.
The lineup of 18 riders and horses for Omaha is still to be decided but America’s Steffen Peters of San Diego, California and the 2009 champion is given a chance of joining Laura Graves of Geneva, Florida and Kasey Perry-Glass of Wellington, Florida.
The likely starting combinations include:
Hans Peter Minderhoud of Netherlands (title defender)
Isabel Werth of Germany
Kristy Oatley of Australia
Carl Hester of Great Britain
Marcela Krinke Susmelj of Switzerland
Fabienne Lütkemeier of Germany
Jessica von Bredow-Werndly of Germany
Judy Reynolds of Ireland
Madeleine Witte-Vrees of the Netherlands
Edward Gal of the Netherlands
Inessa Merkulova of Russia
Hanna Karasiova of Belarus
Laura Graves of the United States
Kasey Perry-Glass of the United States
Wendi Williamson of New Zealand
Maria Florencia Manfredi of Argentina
José Victor Oliva, Jr. of Brazil
One spot to be decided
