DOHA, Qatar, Mar. 4, 2017–Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH won the CDI5* Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday but Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour posted a personal best to finish just a half percentage point back.
The win by Isabell and the 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding on a score of 81.275 per cent was the 20th in 22 starts on four different Big Tour horses–Don Johnson, Weihegold OLD, Emilio and El Santo NRW–8since the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last August.
Cathrine Dufour and her 14-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding scored 80.775 per cent for second place, the first result above 80 per cent since the pair started Big Tour 17 months ago, including a trip to the Rio de Janeiro Games. The pair placed second in the Grand Prix Friday also on a personal best score.
Cathrine is 25 years old and has partnered with Cassidy in international competitions since 2010 when the pair took freestyle silver at the European Junior Championships, team and individual silver and freestyle bronze at the European Young Riders the following year, swept the championships in 2012 and took individual and freestyle gold in 2013. The duo qualified through to the freestyle at the Olympics to place 13th.
Anna Kasprzak and Donnperignon, Danish team mate at the Olympics, placed third on 78.700 per cent in the first competition since Rio.
Donnperignon is now 18 years old and counts the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, the 2014 World Games and two European Championships with Anna. The horse was competed for Germany by Christoph Koschel for team bronze at the 2010 World Games in Kentucky and team silver at the 2011 Europeans.
