AMSTERDAM, Jan. 28, 2017–Isabell Werth was awarded a career high score of 90.720 per cent in riding her Olympic team gold medal partner Weihegold OLD to victory at the Jumping Amsterdam World Cup Freestyle Saturday.
The performance on the 12-year-old Oldenburg mare was the third win on this season’s World Cup circuit and boosted the most successful Olympic equestrian rider in history to the top of the Western European League standings with 60 points.
Isabell, the world No. 1 combination with Weihegold, is assured of a start in the World Cup Final being held for the first time in the American heartland city of Omaha Mar. 27-April 2.
She is twice a winner of the annual world indoor championship decided by the musical freestyle.
“I’m so happy, this is our best form ever,” said Isabell, “and I hope to save that for as long as I can. We are becoming safer with the music, more confident and together with it, this was really a perfect day.”
Carl Hester on his Olympic team silver medal horse Nip Tuck, a 14 year-old KWPN gelding, was second on 83.325 per cent and moves to second in the standings that likely assured the British rider a berth in Omaha. The pair won at London Olympia’s Christmas show and was second behind Isabell and Weihegold in Lyon, France in October following their Olympic team silver medal performance in Rio de Janeiro.
“I alway save everything for one day, I had to be reserved yesterday (in the Grand Prix),” Carl said after his ride. “I had a great feeling today, when we came into the arena and the crowd went crazy because of Isabell’s score I just though I might as well just go for it.”
Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and his Olympic mount Deja, a 13-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare, placed third on 80.269 per cent, with hometown favorite Edward Gal on Glock’s Voice fourth on 80.245 per cent.
Patrik said: “My mare was absolutely fabulous and I love competing here. I think today was the strongest field of the World Cup qualifiers so far.”
Reigning World Cup champion Hans Peter and Flirt on his title-winning mount Glock’s Flirt had a disappointing 79.610 per cent after difficulty in a piaffe half-pirouette. Hans Peter is automatically given a slot at Omaha as the defending champion whose ride Saturday met the requirement of competing in two freestyles this season.
Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez on Lorenzo was eliminated when a post-competition steward’s inspection discovered a small injury.
