FRANKFURT, Germany, De. 17, 2016–Anabel Balkenhol rode Dablino FRH to victory in the CDI4* Grand Prix Special Saturday posting double wins at the Festhallen Reitturnier on her 2012 Olympic mount and rounding out the most successful of seven years at Big Tour.
Anabel and the 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding that she began competing at CDI Grand Prix in 2009 scored 76.706 per cent for the win a day after taking the Grand Prix.
Fabienne Lütkemeier on Fabregaz were awarded a personal best 74.608 per cent for second place, as they did in the Grand Prix. Sweden’s Michelle Hagman on Happiness placed third on 72.784 per cent.
For Anabel, 44 years old and the daughter of German Olympic gold medal winner Klaus Balkenhol, former United States team coach, Dablino is “better than ever” after posting the fifth win this year, the most ever.
“We practice very good management,” Anabel told dressage-news.com. “He’s not working hard at home, we don’t go to hundreds of shows; we pick carefully where we go. He’s just very steady and healthy.
“We try to keep him happy, keep up his strength without doing too much, with lot of breaks in between. One day we’d work on half passes, another day a bit of piaffe and passage, maybe some canter work or rising trot. We try to keep it within one hour.
“We have trail rides and he stays happy. He is fantastic right now.”
Dablino, ranked 27th in the world, has made 69 starts in his Grand Prix career–including 16 wins.
Championship highlights were the 2012 Olympics in London where she rode as an individual for Germany and on the bronze medal team at the 2010 World Games in Kentucky.
Anabel plans to compete Dablino through next year “as long as he’s as happy and fit as he is now. People are happy to see him. Everybody realizes he’s having the time of his life.
“We will stop if he doesn’t have spirit and fun, but will go on as long as he has his youth.”
