LONDON, Dec. 14, 2016–Carl Hester and Nip Tuck on Wednesday night won the London International Horse Show World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle for the second year in a row for the British Olympic team silver medal partnership.
Thunderous applause from the 7,500 spectators packed into the Olympia exhibition hall–the retirement of of Valegro helped produce a second sold out night–greeted the score of 84.669 per cent. That was enough to give Carl a good chance of appearing in his first World Cup Final since competing Escapado at Las Vegas in 2005.
The 20 points that Carl and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding picked up here added to the 17 points won in Lyon, France six weeks ago and ranked the pair sixth after five of the nine Western European League qualifiers which gets to send nine combinations to the Final in Omaha, Nebraska Mar. 27-April 2.
“This was the biggest atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at Olympia,” said Carl. “Barney (Nip Tuck) was a little on edge, but I’m really pleased that in that atmosphere he kept with me!”
He plans to compete Nip Tuck at Amsterdam, the next World Cup event to be held at the end of January.
Hans Peter Minderhoud of the Netherlands, who needs only to start in two events as he is the defending World Cup champion, scored 81.880 per cent on Glock’s Flirt for second place in only their second show this year.
Edward Gal, also of the Netherlands and a champion on Totilas in 2010, rode Glock’s Voice to a score of 80.467 per cent for third place.
Judy Reynolds and Vancouver K were the stars of the night, performing to a collage of Christmas carols that she prepared specially for this show to earn the Irish rider and her 14-year-old KWPN gelding a score of 78.269 per cent, a personal best in 2 1/2 years competing at Big Tour.
The result added 15 points to a victory worth 20 points in a World Cup in Devon, Pennsylvania following on her appearance at New York’s Central Park Horse Show three months ago and 10 points at Stuttgart, Germany in November to give the duo enough points to put them at the top of the WEL rankings.
Kristy Oatley, a multi Olympian for Australia, lives in Germany and has declared herself for the Western European League did not compete here but has earned enough points so far that kept her one point behind Judy second place.
