The Nations Cup series won by the United States in its inaugural year could expand beyond America and western Europe to central Europe in 2017, according to the tentative schedule, and lure more nations to participate.

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) bureau at its meeting in Tokyo approved the format and rules of the team series for the second official year that will have a total of seven events, one more than in 2016 when the United States won two Nations Cups and placed second twice to beat out Sweden for the title with Denmark third.

The schedule for 2017 kicks off with the CDIO3* at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida Mar. 21-26 as it did in 2016 that was the first official year of the team competition with five events in western Europe.

A CDIO4* in Kiev, Ukraine is on the calendar for May 5-7 that would be the first Nations Cup in central Europe since the series was launched as a test in 2013 and formally inaugurated in 2016 after three trial years.

Fifteen countries from North and South America and Australia as well as from across Europe competed in the 2016 series.

The complete schedule for 2017:

CDIO3* Wellington, Florida Mar. 21-26
CDIO4* Kiev, Ukraine May 5-7 (to be confirmed)
