STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 19, 2016–Germany’s Olympic team gold medal pair of Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD won the German Masters Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday for her second World Cup victory to move the pair to within a point of the top of the Western European League.
The score of 89.418 per cent for Isabell and the 11-year-old Oldenburg mare led a German sweep of the top three places, the third of nine events in the WEL leading to the Final in Omaha, Nebraska in March.
Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH, in their first competition since the Rio Games, placed second on 86.306 per cent with Fabienne Lütkemeier on D’Agostino FRH third on 78.886 per cent.
The win by the world No. 1 gave Isabell and Weihegold the maximum of 20 points that with the victory in Lyon, France a month ago put them at 40 points, one behind Switzerland’s Marcela Krinke Susmelj who placed sixth here on Smeyers Molberg. Australia’s Kristy Oatley who did not compete here is in third place on 33 points.
The score for the winning combination was their second highest since Isabell took over the ride less than 10 months ago, eclipsed by 90.090 per cent posted at the World Cup in Lyon.
Isabell is the winner of 10 Olympic medals, more than any other equestrian, and is seeking her third World Cup, her two victories having come on Warum Nicht FRH in Las Vegas in 2007 and Fabienne in Göteborg, Sweden in 1992.
The next WEL event is in Salzburg, Austria Dec. 7-11.
