STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 18, 2016–Isabell Werth rode her Olympic mount Weihegold OLD to a personal best score of 84.340 per cent to win the German Masters World Cup Grand Prix Friday and the highest ever Grand Prix result for the rider in almost three decades of international competition.

Isabell and the 11-year-old Oldenburg mare, the No. 1 ranked pair in the world that won team gold and individual silver in Rio de Janeiro three months ago, posted a result that was 5.2 per cent higher than second placed German team mate Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH on 79.140 per cent. This was the first competition for Kristina and the 15-year-old stallion since the Rio Games.

Spencer Wilton and Super Nova, on Great Britain’s silver medal team at the Olympics, scored 74.948 per cent, the second best result in more than 2 1/2 years at Grand Prix and the highest outside their homeland.

The result for Isabell, 47 years old, with 10 Olympic medals, the most for any equestrian, was the 10th victory in 16 starts since taking over the ride on Weihegold (Don Schufro x Sandro Hit) at the end of January this year. It was just 0.731 per cent below the Olympic Grand Prix result of 85.071 per cent for Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, the winners of three Olympic gold medals whose final competition was in Rio.

The previous best Grand Prix result for Isabell was 83.940 per cent on Weihegold at the World Cup event in Lyon, France last month.

The Grand Prix Freestyle is scheduled for Saturday to decide points in the World Cup Western European League leading to the Final in Omaha next March.

Placing in the top three for Isabell and Weihegold could move the duo to the top of the WEL standings and a top prospect for Omaha and a shot for Isabell’s third World Cup title.
