Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez on Lorenzo kicked off the Reem Acra World Cup Western European series with victory in the Grand Prix Freestyle at Odense, Denmark Sunday in the campaign for a start in the Final in Omaha next March.

Severo and the 10-year-old gelding ranked No.14 in the world scored 82.060 per cent for the ride with the highlight a one-handed passage final centerline to the clapping in unison of the crowd. The pair was the top placed for Spain by slotting into fifth at the summer Olympics although competing at Big Tour only since February this year.

Sweden’s seven-time Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén and Paridon Magi posted a personal best of 79.555 per cent to place second in her campaign to earn enough points to put her in contention for a World Cup final start before she leaves at year’s end for the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida. There, she can earn full points at only one show outside her home league.

Fellow Swede Rose Mathisen on Zuidenwind was third on 77.400 per cent (earlier results placed the pair fourth).

Australia’s Kristy Oatley and her Olympic partner Du Soleil posted a personal best of 76.705 per cent for fourth place. Kristy, a four-time Olympian for Australia though based in Germany, began the Big Tour career of the 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, a year ago.

The score for the pair was the highest since Kristy earned 77.650 per cent on Quando Quando in March 2008 before their appearance later in the year at the Beijing Olympics.

This event was the first of nine Western European League qualifiers and the first CDI musical performance for the Spanish duo since their personal best of 83.625 per cent in the freestyle for individual honors at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The 28-year-old Severo, based in Denmark and rider of Fiontini to world champion at both five and six years old in 2015 and 2016, was competing in his first World Cup event on Lorenzo, aiming for the final in the 32nd year of the annual global dressage championship centered on the Freestyle.

The final that will have a maximum of 18 horses and riders is being staged in Omaha in America’s Midwest for the first time along with the World Cup Jumping Final Mar. 27-April 2. Western Europe gets nine places, Central Europe and North America two each, Pacific/Asia one, the titleholder (Hans Peter Minderhoud of the Netherlands), a combination from outside the four established leagues and two wild cards.

Although Severo and Lorenzo earned the maximum of 20 points–Western and Central European Leagues are decided by points for placings in the top four results–it was not enough to put the pair at the top of the WEL standings.

By picking up points in one of the other World Cup leagues ahead of time, the Ukraine’s Inna Logutenkova is atop the standings with 28 points, followed by Finland’s Terhi Stegars on 23.

Denmark’s Mai Tofte Olesen picked up 10 points for seventh place Sunday, that added to 13 earned in Central Europe brought them 23. Finland’s Anna von Wendt on 22 along with Sascha Schulz of Luxembourg, with Judy Reynolds of Ireland, Marcela Krinke Susmelj of Switzerland and Morgan Barbançon Mestre of Spain all on 20 points.

Tinne joins a group on 17 points while Rose picks up 15 points and Kristy 13.

The next WEL qualifier is in Lyon, France later this week.

The Pacific/Asia circuit received an injection of excitement this weekend with a World Cup freestyle win by 18-year-old Aussie Mary Warren on her homebred Mindarah Park Ramadan. She competed the breeding stallion successfully at Young Riders through last year.

Mary may be the youngest ever winner of a World Cup event Down Under, according to a search by dressage-news.com of available records over the past 12 years.
