AACHEN, Germany, Jul 14, 2016–Isabell Werth on Weihegold OLD logged a personal best Grand Prix score of 83.271 per cent, just 0.009 per cent below Valegro’s latest result, and three of the top German Olympic prospects made history in posting three marks above 80 per cent in the CDIO5* Nations Cup Thursday.

The score for Isabell and the 11-year-old Oldenburg mare along with 82.314 per cent for world No. 1 Kristina Bröring-Sprehe on Desperados FRH and 80.700 per cent for Dorothee Schneider and Showtime was believed to be the first time that three combinations in an international team event have scored above 80 percent.

The results gave Germany a dominating lead in the Grand Prix, the first of two rounds in the World Equestrian Festival team event, the last major competition ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in three weeks.

Monica Theodorescu, the German tem coach, said: “That was fantastic, a super outcome but nevertheless there is still room for slight improvement–things couldn’t be better after the first day.”

Steffen Peters of the United States on Legolas placed fourth on 77.243 per cent, behind only the three German 80 per cent rides.

The American pair broke up a German team sweep of the top spots with the 21-year-old Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo placing fifth on 75.600 per cent. Sönke and the nine-year-old KWPN gelding were trending above 80 per cent until a big mistake in the two-tempi changes where the pair were awarded ones and twos followed shortly after by poorly executed five half-passes dropped the score dramatically.

The United States was standing second with the Grand Prix Special left to go to determine the trans-Atlantic series of six events and the Americans are contenders to take the title in the first official year of the series.
