WERRIBEE, Australia, June 12, 2016–Heath Ryan and Utopian Cardinal won the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday for the first back-to-back victories for the Olympic rider and his homebred stallion.
Heath and the 12-year-old son of his longtime Grand Pix mount Regardez Moi scored 70.900 per cent for the win. The victory earns the pair an invitation to the Asia/Pacific league final where the single representative will be selected for the annual global championship to be held in Omaha, Nebraska next March.
The pair won the Grand Prix Saturday.
Deon Stokes on Royal Oak II placed second on 69.000 per cent and Pauline Carnovale on Urestan third on 68.750 per cent.
Deon also competed on another horse in the CCI2* that, along with the World Cup dressage, was part of the Melbourne 3-Day Event.
Australia’s top eight dressage combinations are in Europe competing for a start on the nation’s team at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August.
The Asia/Pacific League is the only one of four geographic divisions–Central Europe, Western Europe and North America are the others–to stage a league final. The other leagues are decided by points earned in World Cup events or an average of best scores.
