ROOSENDAAL, Netherlands, June 5, 2006–With just 0.4 percentage points separating the top three, Madeleine Witte-Vrees and Cennin won the Den Goubergh CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday with the USA’s Steffen Peters on Rosamunde third.
Madeleine and the nine-year-old KWPN stallion were awarded 77.650 per cent for the win with two judges placing the pair first. Fellow Dutch rider Danielle Heijkoop returning with Siro after more than a year out of competition with an injury were 0.1 per cent behind for second on 77.550 per cent.
Steffen Peters of San Diego, California on Rosamunde, a Rhinelander mare also nine years old, were 0.3 per cent further back on 77.250 per cent and placed first by two other judges.
“A great freestyle for Rosie,” Steffen said. “I was very proud of her since she was a bit nervous in the warm-up.
“Rosie did a super extended walk, which always tells me a lot in a freestyle.
“A wonderful weekend for Rosie and Legolas and team USA.”
The result for Steffen and Rosamunde was their best for a Freestyle this year coming in their first European competition with a squad of American combinations vying for the team to go to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in two months.
With Legolas, the 14-year-old Westfalen gelding stablemate of Rosamunde and both owned by Akiko Yamazaki’s Four Winds Farm, Steffen won the Grand Prix Friday with team mate Laura Graves on Verdades second. In the Grand Prix Special, Steffen and Legolas were second and Laura and Verdades fourth.
The group of seven American riders and nine horses are scheduled to compete at the CDIO5* Nations Cup and companion CDI3* in Rotterdam later this month as the final selection event for the Olympic team of four combinations.
