BONEO, Australia, Jan. 22, 2016–Maree Tomkinson and Diamantina 4 won the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday with only their second score above 70 per cent in four years of Big Tour competitions and put themselves in contention to make the squad from which Australia’s team will be selected for the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Maree and the 14-year-old Oldenburg mare scored 70.120 per cent in the first CDI of the year in Australia as riders and horses pursue their quest to go to Europe for the final selection competitions. The previous award above 70 per cent for the duo was 71.702 per cent in Sydney in May, 2012. The pair have been a Big Tour partnership for four years and competed on the Australian team at the 2014 World Games in Normandy.

New Zealand’s Julie Brougham on Vom Feinsten posted a personal best of 68.720 per cent for second place, the best finish outside their homeland and surpassing the pair’s previous high of 68.260 set in Sydney in May last year.

Julie, the only foreign rider in the Grand Prix, and the 13-year-old Rhinelander gelding lead the rankings for the group of Asian/Australasian countries seeking to earn an individual start at the Rio Olympics.

Mary Hanna and Umbro placed third on 68.220 per cent.

The pair are coming off 10 victories in 15 starts in 2015 that included the World Cup Pacific League Final to earn the pair an invitation to the global Final in Gothenburg, Sweden at the end of March.

The 15-year-old KWPN gelding is in the sixth year of competing at Big Tour in Europe as well as Down Under, but never in an Olympics or an international championship.

Mary also placed fourth on Boogie Woogie on 67.720 per cent.
