SALZBURG, Austria, Dec. 5, 2015–German superstar Isabell Werth rode Don Johnson FRH to a personal best score of 84.125 per cent Sunday to capture the first ever World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle in Austria.

Isabell and the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Don Frederico x Warkant) ranked No. 4 in the world, have now logged eight victories this year, the fifth year of their Grand Prix career.

The Netherlands’ Edward Gal on Glock’s Voice, 13-year-old KWPN stallion, placed second on 80.900 per cent.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on Unee BB, German bronze medal team mates of Isabell and Don Johnson at the European Championships in summer and the bronze medalist at the Final in Las Vegas last April, were third on 80.075 per cent.

Isabell, 46 years old and twice a World Cup champion (Fabienne in 1992 and Warum Nicht FRH in 2007) dominated this event with Don Johnson just two weeks after the duo was runner-up in the World Cup at the German Masters in Stuttgart.

There, the duo came close to matching their highest score at the time of 83.000 per cent set in March 2013. The top three placings Sunday were the same order as the Grand Prix Saturday.

The results of this World Cup moved Isabell and Edward up to equal seventh place in the Western European League World Cup standings on 37 points.

Of the horse she calls “Johnny,” Isabell said: “He has a bit more experience with age so he has become more serious. He has settled down and he are I are growing together now–we know each other really, really well.

“He’s in great shape and he’s much easier to ride now because he has become one horse. A year ago it was difficult for him to carry his whole body in balance, but now he’s really one complete horse and the picture is totally different to how he was two years ago.

“I said it felt really good two weeks ago in Stuttgart and now we have done three great Freestyles in a row which is just fantastic. I’m especially happy because Johnny has often been in the shadow of my other horses but now he’s standing in his own light! He has a very strong personality and he’s really special. He is always positive, and yes he has been a bit naughty but he can always make me laugh. It has been a case of trying to balance his big character with his body so that he could do his best work. He’s right there now, and he feels settled, so for me this feels just great.

“Johnny’s given me the very best Christmas present.”

Patrik Kittel of Sweden remains atop the WEL rankings with 54 points followed by Marcela Krinke Susmelj of Switzerland on 52, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl third on 47 and Hans Peter Minderhoud of the Netherlands in fourth on 41 points

This Amadeus Horse Indoor event is the fifth of nine Western European League qualifiers for the Final of the annual world championship scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden at the end of March.

The next WEL event is scheduled for London Olympia next week.
