USA Lives Up to Hype to Take Commanding Lead in Pan American Games Nations Cup After Day 1

PALGRAVE, Ontario, Juy 11, 2015–The United States took a commanding lead after the first of two days of Pan American Games Nations Cup competition of mixed Big and Small Tour combinations when Canada’s Prix St. Georges horses and riders provided an early score with a pair of outstanding performances.
Steffen Peters and Legolas posted the highest score of the day with 77.240 per cent with team mates Laura Graves on Verdades in fourth on 75.080 per cent as the top two Grand Prix pairs to add a bonus of 1,5 per cent to each duo’s scores.
Combined with the Prix St. Georges result for Kimberly Herslow on Rosmarin of 75.184 per cent that was the third best score but earned no bonus points.
The U.S. established a lead that will be hard to beat on the second day of Intermediate 1 and Grand Prix Special to decide the team medals and could give America its fifth straight Nations Cup gold in this hemispheric championship that provides for one country to earn a start at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
However, the Canadian Small Tour pairs of Brittany Fraser on All In scored 76.105 per cent that was the second highest mark of the day from the five-member international ground jury and Chris Von Martels on Zilvertsar also at small tour scored 75.026 per cent.
The pair were competing in their first senior championship.
Belinda Trussell on Anton, who competed at the last two World Games, scored 73.440 per cent but it was not enough even with the 1.5 per cent extra to overcome the United States lead.
“Awesome, awesome, awesome,” Steffen said after his ride that he described as the best he ever had on the 13-year-old Westfalen gelding.
Brittany Fraser said after her ride which put Canada in the lead and kept herthere individually until the last ride of the 44 rides of the day, Steffen on Legolas: “Amazing, All In was amazing. He is truly a once in a lifetime horse. He never lets me down. He’s never been in a stadium with an atmosphere like this and he just rocked it.
“I had a good feeling going into this. I’m very happy.”
Chris von Martels, who set the pace as he rode before Brittany, said: “I’m very happy with today’s result. It was exactly what we wanted to achieve. Our plan was to ride a very clean, precise test without taking too many risks.
“What an incredible electric atmosphere in the arena. Our Canadians were amazing.”
The closest contest is for the bronze medal where Mexico on 206.703 is just ahead of Brazil on 206.500 but the difference was created by Mexico including a Grand Prix combination to their three-member team, the seasoned world championship rider Bernadette Pujals on Heslegaards Rolex whose score of 69.440 per cent was enhanced by the 1.5 per cent bonus.
Brazil sent an all Small Tour squad with the leading pair of Leandro da Silva on Di Caprio scoring 69.474 per cent.
Although the 4,000-seat stadium was a sellout, bright sun drove temperatures to close to 90F (32.2C) and the metal stands with no shade were mostly less than half full.
A major disappointment was a complete lack of video–no streaming on the Internet, no broadcast, not even a camera to record the rides for the judges to review or for famlies, friends and fans to buy. The organizers had promised the 10 teams competing a video camera would record the championships that are held only once every four years.
But the organizers warned both the teams and the media that any unauthorized video recording would be a violation of the rights of the Games broadcaster, the publicly owned CBC that did not operate at this venue and could result in accreditation being canceled.
Several riders were emotional in their appeal to dressage-news.com to find some way to provide video coverage for an event that they may never participate in again in their life.
The official team standings after the first day in which only the top three scores count, followed by the individual scores:
