VIDAUBAN, FRANCE, July 5, 2015–Juan Matute, Jr. on Dhannie Ymas won the European Championship Junior Freestyle gold medal Sunday for the first international title and first championship score above 80 per cent for the Florida-based 17-year-old son of the Spanish Olympian.
Juan, whose family has lived in Wellington for the past seven years, and the eight-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Don Crusador scored 81.600 per cent in the small tour level competition to edge Germany’s Semmieke Rothenberger on Geisha into the silver medal spot on 81.400 per cent with Denmark’s Victoria E. Vallentin on Atnon on 78.275 per cent taking bronze.
The Young Rider Freestyle championship gold was captured by Germany’s Bianca Nowag on Fair Play RB with a score of 82.775 per cent, with the Netherlands’ Dana van Lierop on Equestricons Walkuere taking silver on 81.725 per cent and Sweden’s Marina Mattsson on Double Diamond II the bronze on 79.350 per cent.
Juan Matute, No. 2 on the world junior rankings and coached by his father, was placed first by two judges and second by three others on the five-member ground jury, while Semmieke who led the German team to the championship gold medal and won individual silver Saturday, was awarded first by three judges and second by two.
Juan and Dhannie was the leading combination on the Spanish team in the Junior Nations Cup and placed seventh individually in the field of 67 starting pairs then moved up to fourth place in the Junior individual competition Saturday.
The victory Sunday was the ninth for the pair on both sides of the Atlantic in 2015.
“We all dream of a medal, but actually winning one is a world of difference!” Juan said afterward. “I’m so happy and so proud!
“We have been living for the last seven years in Wellington, Florida so we have the winter season there and then in the summer we come to Europe. In Florida from January to March the CDI is non-stop and it’s a great place to compete and train, but when you come to Europe the quality of riders is much higher.
“I have been riding this horse for two years now and did Arezzo Europeans with her last summer. She is only eight years old and we will compete together in the 7/9 Year Old category at the World Breeding Dressage Championships in August–I’m really looking forward to that!”
These championships were the fourth straight as a junior for Juan, who also competes internationally at both senior and Under-25 Grand Prix on Don Diego Ymas that he rode in his first Europeans as a Junior in 2012. He also competes in Young Riders on Quantico Ymas and on Jamaicano de Ymas III made his first appearance at the World Young Horse Championships in 2014.
