HAGEN, Germany, April 22, 2015–The 17-year-old Jil-Marielle Becks rode Damon Hill to victory Wednesday in the CDI1* Horses & Dreams Prix St. Georges, the first international competitionfor Germany’s top ranked horse since the owner’s daughter took over the ride.
Jil-Marielle and the 15-year-old Westfalen stallion scored 79.211 per cent with Sweden’s Jessica Andersson on Callaho’s Benicio second on 77.553 per cent and German Olympian Dorothee Schneider on Derano 7 third on 75.105 per cent.
Helen Langehanenberg, who rode Damon Hill to Olympic team silver in 2012 and World Games gold in 2014, placed fifth on Diamigo OLD with a score of 73.605 per cent.
The World Games in Normandy was the last championship for Helen and Damon Hill before disagreement over continuing to compete the horse led to owner Christian Becks to turn over the ride to his Young Rider daughter. Helen and Damon Hill are still ranked No. 2 in the world behind Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro.
“Everybody thinks it would be easy to ride such an experienced Grand Prix-horse, particularly in an advanced level dressage test. But it is even more difficult,” said the rider after topping the class of 27 riders from 12 nations.
“First he wanted to perform even more than less changes and was pretty much focused on Grand Prix.”
With training help from her father and with Heiner Schiergen, she said, “I simply benefit from Damon Hill’s experiences. He is a strict teacher. If I commit a mistake, he does the same. This way he forces me to ride completely concentrated all the time.”
Jil-Marielle said the conditions in Hagen helped a lot. Damon Hill will get a break for a couple of days.
Jil-Marielle is seeking to qualify for the German team for the 2015 European Young Riders Championships in Vidauban, France in July.
