WERRIBEE, Australia, Mar. 28, 2015–Australian Olympian Mary Hanna and Umbro won the first World Cup event for the 2016 Final when the pair claimed the Grand Prix Freestyle at Jumping with the Stars Saturday.
Mary and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding scored 73.725 per cent for the win with Brett Parbery on DP Weltmieser second on 71.950 per cent and the Australian team World Games pair of Diamantina 4 third on 71.750 per cent.
Mary and Umbro won the Pacific League Final in January to qualify for the World Cup Final in Las Vegas next month but opted not to go and Australia will not be represented at this year’s championship.
The event Saturday was the first in the world for the Final that will be held in April, 2016.
A new effort to raise funds to help Australian dressage riders and horses compete overseas for major championships was also launched at the event.
Mary Hanna and her husband Rob were the first to pledge funds for the Australian Dressage International Travel Fund Trust aimed at providing financial assistance to Australian-based riders for transport, stabling and accommodation as well as training and equipment expenses in countries outside Australia.
