NEUMÜNSTER, Germany, Feb. 15, 2015–Germany’s Ulla Salzgeber rode her 16-year-old Herzruf’s Erbe to victory in the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday with their highest score in almost four years.
Ulla, Olympic gold medal rider and third on Herzi at the World Cup Final in 2011, scored 82.775 per cent for their second win in this season’s Western European League series and an outside chance of going to the Final in Las Vegas in mid-April.
Ulla and the Rhinelander gelding that she began competing at international Grand Prix almost seven years ago but has been sidelined for several long periods with injuries, edged out fellow Germans Fabienne Lütkemeier on D’Agostino FRH on 80.775 per cent and Isabell Werth on El Santo NRW on 79.850 per cent.
The results at this seventh of nine Western European League competitions moved Ulla into the top 10 in the standings and Isabell jumped into third place for German riders that could give her a chance to go to Las Vegas where she won the title on Warum Nicht FRH in 2007.
With the top nine from Western Europe, but no more than three from one nation, like to be invited to Las Vegas, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl of Germany remains atop the standings with 71 points, Fabienne moves into second place on 64, Danielle Heijkoop of the Netherlands in third on 60 and compatriot Hans Peter Minderhoud tied with Isabell Werth on 55 for fourth. Reigning champion Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain on Valegro has already fulfilled the required two-event participation to earn a start at the Thomas & Mack Center that hosted the dressage Final along with jumping in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
The next WEL World Cup event is in Gothernburg, Sweden in two weeks with the last in the league at s’-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in mid-March.
The North American led by Lars Petersen of Denmark still has four qualifiers to go–two in Wellington, Florida and two in Southern California. The Pacific and Central European Leagues have been completed.
