WELLINGTON, Florida, Feb. 6, 2015–Lars Petersen and Mariett, the 17-year-old mare that keeps getting better as she gets older, won the world’s richest dressage competition Friday night, the $200,000 (€177,700) Adequan Global Dressage Festival CDI5* Grand Prix Freestyle.
To the accompaniment of fun music that the Danish Olympian prefers, Mariett performed under lights what Lars said was one of their best ever Freestyles before a standing-room only crowd to score 79.175 per cent.
Steffen Peters of San Diego, California on Legolas recovered from a sub-par performance in the Grand Prix to place second in the Freestyle on a score of 76.200 per cent while Florida-based Danish team rider Mikala Gundersen on My Lady slotted into third on 75.725 per cent. the same score as Spanish Olympian Jose Daniel Martin Dockx on the U.S.-owned Grandioso.
The score for Lars and Mariett, the mare he owns with Marcia Pepper, was their second highest ever, surpassed only by the 79.950 per cent attained at Global last March that boosted the combination to the top of the North American League World Cup standings for the 2014 Final.
